Andy’s book ‘Effective Personal Communication’ champions greater understanding of ‘memes’ – a term first coined by Richard Dawkins in his seminal book the ‘Selfish Gene’. (Andy’s book is believed to have been the first public relations text to embrace and address memes.)
The example used by Dawkins and shared by Andy in his talks is ‘Happy Birthday’; you no doubt know the words and can sing along. Yet, you have not been on a ‘Happy Birthday’ training course nor read the ‘Happy Birthday’ training manual.
‘Happy Birthday’ is an example of a meme: a body of cultural information that is coherent, copyable, and can be pased on of its own volition, well beyond the orbit of the original sender of the message.
So, if you can create a message that lives on, gets passed on, and on, and on, you have the seed of a powerful communication.
